Leonardo Vinci studied with Gaetano Greco at the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo, Naples from 1708. In 1719 he was maestro di cappella to the Prince of Sansevero, and from 1725 until his death was pro-vicemaestro of the Capella Reale, Naples. In summer 1728 he became maestro di cappella at the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo, where he included Pergolesi among his pupils.

In addition to some forty operas, for which he probably traveled to Venice, Parma, Rome, and Naples to direct the premieres, Vinci wrote cantatas, sonatas, a serenata, and an oratorio.
